Domain Name FAQ

There is a lot of confusion how domain name registration works and in everyone’s effort I’ve written up a list of the common misconceptions of domain name registration, renewal and transfer. I must stress that this is not point2point’s policy but are general rules set down by the governing body ICANN.

I don’t want to register my domain with anyone, can I just register it with myself?

A domain registrar such as GoDaddy, Network Solutions, point2point or countless others are required for domain registration and renewal. You still own the domain name, similar to how you own a phone number which can be transferred from one phone company to another. Prices and support vary from company to company so be very aware of your registrars’ support boundaries.

How can I verify that I own my domain name or have the correct contact information on file with ICANN?

A easy way to quickly determine who owns your domain name is to preform a WHOIS lookup on the domain name. There are many sites available to do WHOIS lookup but we prefer Whois.net but the information each site will give you will be the same.

I renewed or registered a domain name I no longer want, can I cancel the registration or renewal and receive a refund?

Domain registration and renewal are completely non refundable simply because once the order is processed it is instantly recorded with ICANN. When the domain registrar processes the order the registrar pays ICANN and a additional year is added to the registration or in the case of a new domain name, the registration occurs.

My domain name is already expired, can I transfer it to another registrar?

Once a domain expires with a registrar it must be renewed at that registrar. This is a default policy which all registrars have no choice but to follow. Once the domain is renewed for a additional year it can then be transferred which adds a additional 1 year to the registration.

Can point2point transfer my domain name to another registrar?

If you wish for us to handle the transferring of a domain name a additional administrative fee for interacting with your new registrar will be applied. This is because all aspects of your domain name are easily accessible via our client area and transfers do not require any effort on point2point’s behalf.  Unlocking the domain name, receiving the EPP authorization code via e-mail is all accessible in our client panel.
